Bridle Rolls

Urethane Bridle Rolls
Core Construction
The performance of a bridle roll depends on the stability and strength of its core. Universal Urethane manufactures and refurbishes complete cores to exact tolerances, ensuring reliability under heavy loading and rapid rotation.
- Core Materials: Steel, aluminum, and cast metals available in solid or tubing construction.
- Precision Machining: Journals and bearing seats are restored or manufactured to print for accurate fit.
- Dynamic Balancing: Rolls are balanced after machining and shaft work to ensure smooth operation at high speeds.
- Complete Assemblies: Universal can supply bridle rolls fully assembled with shafts, bearings, couplings, and covers, ready for installation.
Urethane Covering
The urethane covering is engineered to maintain traction and surface protection even in harsh environments. Universal Urethane’s open-cast polyurethane process produces covers with uniform hardness and superior adhesion to the core.
- Durometer Range: 85–90 Shore A, with options up to 95 Shore A for select elastomers.
- Surface Finish: Smooth ground or textured surfaces; rough-ground finishes specified to Ra 3–10 µm for reliable grip on oily or wet strip.
- Grooved Options: Diamond, helix, herringbone, spiral, chevron, checkerboard razor slots, and non-directional crepe profiles available for customized traction and fluid management.
- Performance Properties: High abrasion resistance, load-bearing strength, impact absorption, and non-marring contact with steel and aluminum substrates.
- Bonding Method: Grit-blasted cores, primer adhesives, and heat-cured urethane prevent delamination under severe operating conditions.
- Alternative Coatings: Tungsten carbide and specialty elastomers offered for extreme service applications.
Performance in Coil Processing
Bridle rolls function as critical traction elements within coil and web-processing lines. Universal Urethane bridle rolls are engineered to:
- Provide stable strip tension and tracking through leveling, coating, and galvanizing processes.
- Maintain traction across high line speeds and varying load conditions.
- Deliver consistent friction in wet, oily, or chemically treated environments.
- Resist wear, abrasion, and chemical attack for extended service intervals.
Maintenance & Recovering Services
Universal Urethane offers full-service recovering and refurbishment to extend roll life and reduce downtime.
- Recovering: Worn coverings are stripped, cores inspected, and new urethane applied to original or upgraded specifications.
- Rebuild Process: Frames cleaned and straightened, bearings and housings removed, UT and Wet MAG inspections performed, coverings reapplied and finished to print, and assemblies reinstalled with new or reconditioned components.
- Balancing & Finishing: Static and dynamic balancing provided; finishes ground and polished to specified Ra and groove profiles.
- Service Options: Standard and expedited turnaround services available with pickup and delivery.
Applications
Urethane bridle rolls are deployed in industries where precise traction and tension management are essential:
- Steel and aluminum coil processing lines
- Tension leveling and cleaning lines
- Galvanizing and coating operations
- Printing, papermaking, and textile production
