Idler Rollers

Urethane Idler ROllers
Universal Urethane manufactures urethane idler rollers for coil processing and material-handling lines, engineered to provide smooth strip support and long-lasting durability. Designed as non-driven rollers, our urethane-covered idlers maintain consistent product flow, protect sensitive surfaces, and perform reliably under continuous use.
Core Construction
The strength of an idler roller begins with its core, which must support constant loads without deflection.
- Core Materials: Steel, stainless steel, or aluminum in solid or tubing construction.
- Precision Machining: Journals and bearing seats manufactured or restored to print for proper fit and rotation.
- Inspection & Testing: Ultrasonic (UT) and Wet MAG inspections performed on shafts and weldments; reports provided with recovered rollers.
- Journal & Shaft Services: Shaft replacement, weld buildup, and hydraulic press services restore existing cores.
- Dynamic Balancing: Idler rollers balanced after machining and covering to ensure smooth, quiet operation.
- Complete Assemblies: Available fully assembled with shafts, bearings, and couplings for drop-in installation.
Urethane Covering
The covering ensures surface protection and wear life under continuous line speeds.
- Durometer Range: Custom polyurethane hardness, typically 85–95 Shore A for durability and shape retention.
- Surface Finish: Smooth ground for non-marking contact; rough-ground Ra finishes for added grip.
- Grooved Options: Diamond, helix, herringbone, spiral, chevron, checkerboard razor slots, and crepe profiles available.
- Performance Properties: Excellent abrasion resistance, non-marring contact, impact absorption, and resistance to oils and cleaners.
- Bonding & Cure: Grit-blasted cores, primer adhesives, and heat curing ensure strong adhesion and long service life.
Performance in Coil Processing
Urethane idler rollers deliver reliable strip support in demanding coil and web-handling environments.
- Provide consistent pass-line support and strip tracking.
- Reduce vibration and noise through balanced, smooth rotation.
- Protect sensitive surfaces from scratches or marking.
- Resist chemical exposure and abrasion for extended intervals between recover cycles.
Maintenance & Recovering Services
Universal Urethane extends service life and lowers total cost through comprehensive recovering services.
- Recovering: Old coverings stripped, cores inspected, and new urethane applied to OEM or upgraded specs.
- Rebuild Process: Full inspection, NDT testing, grinding, balancing, and finishing performed before reassembly.
- Service Options: Standard and expedited turnaround available with pickup and delivery.
Applications
- Coil processing pass lines
- Strip support stations
- Web-handling and material transport systems
- General industrial conveying
